When most people think of home theaters, they often think of a darkened room, comfy couches, popcorn, and the big screen TV...but they might be forgetting one the most important aspects of an impactful and complete home theater system - the speakers! The home theater speakers really "make" the experience what it is. Without surround sound and some great quality speakers, you will be missing half of what makes home theater tons of fun.
The main difference between "regular" television watching and home theater is the surround sound. To get the best surround sound system, you need at least four (or more) speakers strategically placed around the room. You want two or three speakers in the front of the room (in front of where you and other viewers will be seated, ideally), as well as two to three speakers on the sides or in back of you. Why, exactly do you want this kind of setup? It is not just so the speakers can distribute sound around the room evenly; it is to that the audio signal can actually be divided up amongst the different speakers. So different sound information and therefore, sounds come out of all the different speakers!

For example, let's say you are watching an action-packed movie that has a big chase scene. You might hear screeching tires from the front and the sound of guns shooting from behind - this is what gives surround sound its exciting feel. It feels like you are right in the action of the movie.
In general, the most important sounds will come out of the front speakers, like dialogue. But if a character in the film is doing something on the right of the screen, like dropping a glass, you might hear that glass breaking to the right of you.
There is a speaker that should be place in the very center of the front of the room, usually under or above the television screen. This is called the anchor speaker because it anchors the sound emanating from both the left and right speakers and is where all spoken parts and front sound effects will be coming from.
The speakers located behind the seats will add extra sounds like those mentioned above, like the sound of wind, or a car door slamming outside a house, for example. The back speakers will also coordinate with the front speakers to make it seem like the scene is moving, such as having a sound begin behind you and travel forward and end in front of you. These are subtle techniques you may not even notice or know exactly what or how they are happening, but you will know you are having an incredible sound experience!
